The deregulation of fuel pump prices is attracting comments and attention from various stakeholders in the nigerian economy. Not unexpectedly, labour has taken a strong stand against the proposed removal of subsidies in the pricing of petroleum products and has set a trend for all kinds of rational and irrational comments on the isue. I believe the pricing has been irrelevant in the pump price which is more sensitive to product availability than any other factor. The proof of this is more evident during periods of product scarcity when arbitrary prices are set by marketers!what should be of utmost concerns to Nigeriains is how to assure stable and consistent availability of fuel in a competitive environment where pricing is determined by logistics efficiency of the marketers. In the medium to long term this is bound to achieve an equilibrium around a "fair market price". It should also be of interest that fuel importation will now be opened to all comers under an open license arrangement where government agencies will only be concerned with quality assurance. Just like food prices are cheaper in the hinteland for example than in Lagos, industries and consumers in Lagos and other ports areas are bound to benefit most from this policy, naturally but in the long run, we guarantee availability of the product on account of price differentials across the country. What is your view on this?is labour right this time?
